The Back / Gluing and Carving the Braces

Still Saturday, June 4, 2011:

One last photo for today — here I have jointed and joined the Mayan walnut set that I have for the back. The back and sides set came from Hibdon Hardwoods. I think it will be a really beautiful wood to use for this instrument.

Tomorrow I will thickness sand it and begin working on the back.

Sunday, June 5th, 2011:

Today I thickness-sanded the back to around 2mm, drew the plan on the inside, and cut 1/4" around the line. Here I've dampened the outside of the back with water, so you can see the grain:

Here's the inside surface of the back:

I drew the bracing plan onto the back, cut out the spruce braces, and sanded the 15' radius onto the bottoms of the braces. Here I'm gluing the braces on in the go-bar deck:

This is what I woke up to today. All my braces are now glued; they now need to be carved.

Here I have carved and sanded the back braces:

And here I have carved and sanded the top braces:

Finally, I have used some scrap pieces of spruce to make the center reinforcement strip for the back and am gluing them on in the go-bar deck:

That's it for today. Next, I will begin work on the sides.
