Binding

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011:

As soon as I got up today, I removed the masking tape from that first edge I bound yesterday. Here are some quick photos of the results (before any scraping of the binding):

Here's the end wedge and how the mitering of the side purfling went:

Here's the side of the harp box:

And here's the lower bout area:

Stay tuned. Today I plan to finish the rest of the binding!!

Still Wednesday, about 5:30 p.m.:

Only one photo of today's work — it took me around 6-7 hours today to do the rest of the binding. Much of the time was spent fitting and repeatedly checking the positions and angles of the various miter cuts (at the peghead end of the harp box sides and at the end wedge area). I did get better at bending the curly koa bindings, though, once I figured out that it bent much better if I used little or no water to dampen the strips. When I used water, the strips were more prone to crack along the flame lines. I only ended up wasting one binding strip; it cracked all the way through and so was not salvageable.

Here it is, all taped up. I'll probably remove the tape later tonight, just before going to bed, and let it air-cure overnight. Then, tomorrow, I can scrape down the bindings and purflings and fill any gaps.

There's some gap-filling (with Titebond glue and sanding dust) I need to do, here and there, after I do the scraping, but nothing major. Stay tuned for the result!

Still Thursday, 12:30 p.m. :

It's all scraped and sanded now:
