Thursday evening....August 2nd: Well, at around 6:30 p.m., I removed the go-bar sticks from the back. It's a box now --- though not a very pretty one quite yet (I still have to trim the overhang):

I trimmed the overhang first, close to flush (but not quite) with my curved chisel, being very careful not to carve against the grain. The neck and tail end was all end grain (and just about impossible to carve), so I took those ends to my belt sander and very carefully sanded away the bulk of it. Then I made it all flush with the router and a bit with a bearing. Here it is:
