Binding....Day #2

July 21st...Well, I'm into Day 2 of gluing my binding. I just spent about four hours finishing the binding of the peghead (that one piece I didn't do yesterday) and completing the binding on the top.

There it is, to the right. I'll have to wait until tomorrow before I do the binding on the back. I have my technique down now, so tomorrow's binding shouldn't take as long.

By the way, to the left is a quick photo of all the tools I need to have at my disposal as I do the binding:

  • paper towels (for wiping up Duco cement)
  • waxed paper (so glue won't get over everything)
  • masking tape and rubber bands (to hold the binding in place)
  • Duco cement and superglue (for gluing the binding)
  • a tuna can for mixing acetone and binding scraps (for patching miters)
  • popsicle sticks (for wedges to hold in the curly areas of scrolls)
  • sanding block (to sand down the popsicle sticks into wedges)
  • various chisels and a deadblow hammer (for chopping and shaving binding)
  • wood block (to do the chopping on)
  • metal pick (for mixing and applying drops of melted binding)
  • pencil (for marking where I should chop the binding)
  • hair dryer (for softening binding so I can bend it)

Here are a couple of photos of some of my miters. They're a bit messy at the moment, because I had put some of that acetone/binding mixture at the junctures. But when I scrape them down, they should look pretty good, I think!
